  1. In Romans 7, Paul said, For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Gal. 5:17, of course: For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Phil. 3:20f ~ For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Rom. 8:10f ~ And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12f ~ Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

FLESH/ sarx, & BODY/ soma are not always inter-changeable or derogatory, but that Christ has yet to redeem them/ it, and that Paul has little-to-no good to say about them/ it, we ought to be more wary than we are about our fallenness. I mention in passing 1 Cor. 15. ~ Corruptible flesh cannot inherit glory!

I understand and appreciate the historic Reformed desire to avoid gnostic dualism, but many have erred in the other direction, and missed the biblical data above.

Thus also missing some imperatival trees for the indicative forest. That is, fearing the charge of gnosticism, they have not always given necessary weight to such warnings as Paul gives in Romans 6 and Col. 3:5ff ~ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.

  2. Oh yeah, the bad news and the good:

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death*? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

    Romans 7:24f.

    * In modern versions, it’s more graphic: “this body of death.”
