Wes White on “Works of the Law”

“We conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law” (Rom. 3:28).

Wes White writes,

Our works are not the ground or material cause of our justification, and only faith is the way we take hold of Christ for salvation (Jn. 3:16, Gal. 2:16). This exegetical issue is at the heart of our belief that our justification is by faith alone in Christ alone.The opponents of justification by faith alone have to redefine “works of the law” so that it is talking about only some type of works. They do not want it to exclude all works, for they do not want to exclude good works from our justification. Thus, they have always argued that the “works of the law” refer only to the ceremonial laws or the works done before regeneration. However, the Protestant Church has always recognized that when the Bible excludes works of the law from our justification that it includes any and all works that we do whether before or after justification.

“The Board believes that Ken’s public criticism of the convention itself and other speakers at our convention require him to surrender the spiritual privilege of addressing our homeschool audience,” wrote Great Homeschool Conventions conference organizer Brennan Dean in the email dismissing Ham.

Sola Fide or Sola Fidelity? (via Wes White)

Wes White has produced another excellent post highlighting what I believe to be the single most significant issue in the Federal Vision Controversy. Does the Bible present a salvation by Faith Alone? Or perhaps is it by Faithfulness Alone? These questions are at the heart of the gospel, and we must answer them correctly. Pastor White begins his post,

The Federal Visionists want to replace the great sola fide (faith alone) of the Reformation with a doctrine of sola fidelity (justification by faithfulness alone). What’s wrong with a doctrine of sola fidelity? The answer is simple. If we adopt or allow the Federal Visionist sola of sola fidelity, then our justification becomes primarily about what we bring to God and not what we receive from Christ. This eviscerates our doctrine of justification.

Let me illustrate this point. The FV doctrine is that trust is loyalty or faithfulness. It is one thing to say to my wife, “I trust you.” It is something entirely different to say, “I will be loyal to you.” The former is about what I receive from my wife; the latter is what I give. When we turn faith into faithfulness, justification becomes about what we give to God instead of what we receive from Him.

MOP-Approved Meyers investigative committee report now available (via Wes White)

Thanks to Wes White for posting Missouri Presbytery’s final report from the committee investigating TE Jeffrey Meyers. I encourage my readers to take a look, including the ensuing discussion in the comments section of Pastor White’s blog. I have a feeling that MO Presbytery’s exoneration of Federal Vision Joint Statement signer Jeffrey Meyers, clearing him of all charges of teaching contrary to the Westminster standards, will prove to be a very significant event in the battle for the gospel that has been ripping PCA presbyteries to shreds. May God bless the efforts of gospel-defenders like TE White against Federal Vision wolves like Jeffrey Meyers.
